1940年生於東京都,自千葉大學工學部寫真印刷工學科畢業之後,進入日本電通,隸屬攝影部門。1964年以作品「さっちん(阿幸)」榮獲第1屆太陽賞。1971年自費出版和妻子陽子蜜月旅行時拍攝的作品『センチメンタルな旅(感傷之旅)』,限量1,000本。其後,他的作品著眼於妖媚的花朵、緊縛的裸體、天空景緻、食物、東京街景、他飼養的貓等,攝下的物品透過他的鏡頭,顯露出強烈的情慾及毀滅情緒,確立了荒木獨特的攝影風格,獲得日本國內外高度評價,成為日本代表性的當代攝影家之一。

主要個展有「Araki」(吉美博物館,巴黎,2016年)、「往生写集-顔・空景・道」(豊田市美術館,愛知,2014年)、「私・生・死」(巴比肯美術館,倫敦,2005年)、「花人生」(東京都寫真美術館,2003年)、「Suicide in Tokyo」(Giardini di Castello,威尼斯,2002年)、「Tokyo Still Life」(Ikon Gallery,伯明罕,2001年)、「Nobuyoshi Araki」(根特市立當代藝術博物館,2000年)、「荒木経惟 センチメンタルな写真、人生(荒木經惟 感傷的攝影與人生)」(東京都現代美術館,1999年)、「Tokyo Comedy」(維也納分離派會館,1997年)、「荒木経惟・私日記」(卡地亞當代藝術基金會,巴黎,1995年)、「Akt-Tokyo 1971-1991」(Forum Stadtpark,格拉茲,1992年)等。2017年即將舉辦的展覽則有「寫狂老人A」(東京歌劇城藝術畫廊,東京)與「Memoire de Yoko」(東京都寫真美術館,東京)。

Nobuyoshi Araki has achieved world-wide acclaim for his photography, which he began creating in the 1960s. He is known for the great variety of themes and techniques he employs in his work, and for his drive to create, which has resulted in his publishing over 500 photobooks to date—a drive that continues unabated today.
This exhibition catalogue focuses on one theme from his vast oeuvre, his wife Yoko. As Araki himself has said, “It’s thanks to Yoko that I became a photographer.” From their meeting in 1968 until her death in 1990, Yoko was his most important subject.
She has continued to be a major influence on his photography even after her death. In this catalogue, we explore his relationship with the subject he treasured so much and reflect on the “I-Photograph” that is the essence of Araki’s work through his photographs of Yoko and his many works that give a strong sense of her presence. The exhibition title, “Sentimental Journey 1971– 2017–,” refers to Araki Nobuyoshi’s “I-Photographs,” beginning with his self publication of Sentimental Journey as a photobook in 1971, and to his life-long journey as a photographer.

自 1968 年與妻子陽子相遇以來,直到 1990 年陽子去世,這段濃厚充實的時光所刻畫出的影像,成就了攝影最真切的本質。

《センチメンタルな旅 1971- 2017-》一書以荒木陽子為中心,從荒木経惟的眾多作品中,尋找以陽子為主題所拍攝的影像。節錄的作品集包含《東京は、秋》、《食事》、《センチメンタルな旅、冬の旅》、《空景/近景》、《三千空》。其中自費出版、現已成為私寫真經典之作的《センチメンタルな旅》一書,更是將全冊 108 幅作品完整收錄。除此之外,早期未發表的貴重正片、愛貓チロ的拍立得與近期新作也一併呈現。

1971 年所出版的《センチメンタルな旅(感傷之旅)》,可說是荒木経惟至今 500 冊攝影作品集中最為傑出的一部。透過鏡頭,對陽子的愛顯得更加濃烈,無論是 1971 年的從前,或是 2017 年的現在。感傷之旅就如同是他未完待續的攝影人生一般永遠跟隨。

此書為 2017 年中於東京都写真美術館所舉辦的荒木経惟攝影展「センチメンタルな旅 1971- 2017-」的同名展覽目錄,收錄了 402 幅作品,由日本出版社 Hehe 所出版。
